Chandra, Spark Hunter

Chandra Nalaar learned early that fire could mean freedom or disaster. The Consulate hunted her for wielding it. Keral Keep taught her to control it. The Gatewatch gave her a reason to aim it at something larger than the next authority standing in her way.

That power eventually helped destroy two Eldrazi titans. It could not save Gideon Jura, Jaya Ballard, or Jace Beleren's body. Chandra's story is not a steady march from reckless child to disciplined hero. She still charges ahead, gets hurt, and terrifies the people who love her. What changed is why she runs toward the fire.

By the end of Reality Fracture, Chandra is alive, still a planeswalker, and one of the survivors who stopped Jace from replacing the Multiverse. Her latest journey ends where his began: Vryn.

The child the Consulate tried to erase

Chandra was born on Kaladesh, the plane now called Avishkar. Her parents, Pia and Kiran Nalaar, were inventors who supplied aether to people outside the Consulate's control.

Her fire magic appeared when she was young. On a plane where aether powered carefully engineered wonders, Chandra's flames looked uncontrolled and illegal. Pia and Kiran tried to protect her, but Consulate forces led by Baral followed the family out of Ghirapur.

Baral set fire to the village sheltering them. Kiran died during the escape. Pia told Chandra to run, then disappeared in the attack. Chandra believed she had lost both parents.

The Consulate captured her and brought her back to Ghirapur for a public execution. As Baral swung the blade toward her neck, Chandra's planeswalker spark ignited before it landed. She vanished in flame and landed on Regatha.

Doug Beyer's Chandra's Origin: Fire Logic is the controlling version of this history. Earlier publications tell parts of her childhood differently. Magic Origins revised that history rather than adding another hidden chapter. In the later account, Chandra is an only child, Baral starts the fire, and Pia survives.

Chandra would not learn that last truth for years.

Keral Keep and the lessons of Jaya Ballard

On Regatha, Chandra found Keral Keep, a monastery built around the teachings of the pyromancer Jaya Ballard. The monks valued freedom, emotion, and the discipline required to keep either from consuming everyone nearby.

Chandra needed all three.

Her early adventures appeared in Laura Resnick's 2009 novel The Purifying Fire and the web stories "Journey to the Eye" and "Awakenings." The novel follows her conflict with Gideon and the Order of Heliud. The web stories carry her pursuit of the Dragon Scroll's secrets to Zendikar.

The scroll led Chandra to the Eye of Ugin, where she fought Sarkhan Vol with Jace's help. She cast ghostfire, a colorless flame written into the scroll. Their magic opened an ancient lock and helped release the Eldrazi.

Chandra did not know that was the purpose of the Eye. Nicol Bolas had placed other people in motion and let them do the dangerous work without understanding the result. Chandra left Zendikar thinking she had survived another fight. The consequences would return when the Eldrazi titans began consuming the plane.

She went back to Keral Keep. After her teacher Serenok died, the monks chose Chandra as their new abbot. In Offers to the Fire, Jace and Gideon arrive asking for help against the Eldrazi. Chandra refuses. She is tired of being compared with Jaya and does not want another cause deciding who she must become.

Then she looks at Zendikar for herself.

Founding the Gatewatch

Chandra reaches Zendikar after Ob Nixilis has captured Jace, Gideon, and Nissa Revane. She helps free them, but the larger problem remains. Ulamog is loose, Kozilek has returned, and no one planeswalker can stop either titan.

The four make a promise in Oath of the Gatewatch. They will protect the people of the Multiverse together. Chandra's oath is simple: "If it means that people can live in freedom, yeah, I'll keep watch."

That line matters because it gives her rebellion a purpose. Chandra has always hated control. The Gatewatch asks her to defend other people's freedom, not just her own.

Their first victory nearly destroys Zendikar anyway. Nissa pulls Ulamog and Kozilek fully into the plane and binds them through its leylines. Chandra pours her fire into that network. The spell burns both titans until nothing remains but ash.

Zendikar's Last Stand makes the division of labor clear. Chandra delivers the killing force, but Nissa channels it and an entire army helps hold the battlefield. It is a Gatewatch victory, not a solo feat.

On Innistrad, the team learns that the same answer will not always work. They cannot burn Emrakul as they burned the other titans. Chandra and Gideon defend their allies while Jace, Nissa, and Tamiyo complete the spell that seals Emrakul inside Innistrad's moon.

The Gatewatch survives. Chandra's past is waiting at home.

Returning to Kaladesh

A visit from Dovin Baan sends Chandra into a panic. She leaves the Gatewatch's Ravnican headquarters, then returns to Kaladesh with Liliana.

Ghirapur is preparing for the Inventors' Fair. Tezzeret controls the event, the Consulate is arresting inventors, and the renegade movement has a leader Chandra thought was dead: Pia Nalaar.

Their reunion does not repair years of grief in one moment. Pia has built a life around resistance. Chandra has found a family in the Gatewatch. Both are fighting the same government, but Chandra still has to learn what actually happened when she was a child.

Baral forces that memory open. He admits his role in the village fire and Kiran's death, then tries to drive Chandra into losing control. In Burn, she defeats him without killing him. Refusing the execution matters more than winning the fight. Baral wanted proof that her fire could only end in slaughter. Chandra denies him that answer.

The Gatewatch and the renegades break Tezzeret's hold over Ghirapur. Pia takes a place in the new government, and Baral goes to prison. Chandra leaves Kaladesh with her mother alive and her childhood no longer defined by the lie Baral built around it.

Her bond with Nissa deepens during the revolt. Nissa uses breathing and focus to bring her back from the edge of panic. Chandra gives Nissa a way to speak about feelings she has spent much of her life translating into the language of the land.

Neither is ready to name what is growing between them.

Nicol Bolas breaks the Gatewatch

Success on Zendikar and Kaladesh makes the Gatewatch reckless. They follow Tezzeret's trail to Amonkhet and challenge Nicol Bolas before they understand his plan.

Bolas dismantles them.

He breaks Chandra's ribs, smothers her fire, and forces her to planeswalk away. Hour of Devastation leaves the team scattered across the Multiverse. Jace vanishes. Nissa quits. Chandra feels that departure as a personal rejection, even though Nissa is also reacting to a group that nearly got all of them killed.

Chandra still answers when Gideon calls the survivors to Dominaria. She does not trust Liliana's reasons for bringing them there, so she looks for the one pyromancer she believes can help them: Jaya Ballard.

The search ends with a surprise. Mother Luti, the elderly woman who helped guide Keral Keep, was Jaya all along.

In Return to Dominaria: Episode 8, Jaya drops the disguise. Chandra has spent years resenting comparisons with a legend while unknowingly learning from that legend in person.

Jaya joins the fight against Belzenlok. The coalition destroys the demon, but Liliana does not become free. Her contracts pass to Bolas, giving him control over her when he begins his war on Ravnica.

The War of the Spark and Gideon's death

Bolas draws planeswalkers to Ravnica, traps them with the Immortal Sun, and sends the Dreadhorde to harvest their sparks.

Chandra fights as part of the coalition and helps shut down the Immortal Sun so trapped planeswalkers can escape. Later, it is activated again to keep Bolas from fleeing. The plan works only after Liliana turns the Dreadhorde against its master.

Her defiance should kill her. Gideon takes that death instead.

Chandra watches one of the people who helped her build the Gatewatch die to save another member of it. Victory does not soften the loss. Bolas falls, but Chandra leaves the war consumed by grief and anger. She cannot decide what Gideon's sacrifice means for the people who survived him.

She and Nissa do not turn their feelings into a lasting relationship after the war. Grief, fear, and the confused aftermath pull them apart.

Later canon does not leave that separation as the final word.

Innistrad, Jaya, and the next Phyrexian war

Chandra eventually returns to Gatewatch work. On Innistrad, she helps Arlinn Kord, Kaya, Teferi, and the cathar Adeline recover the Moonsilver Key and end the Eternal Night. When they meet, Arlinn gets the distinct impression that Chandra would help with anything Adeline asked. The story leaves it as a brief attraction, not a partnership.

The greater threat is New Phyrexia.

During the defense of Dominaria, Ajani is compleated and kills Jaya. Chandra is not there to witness the killing. She later mourns the teacher whose words shaped Keral Keep and whose hidden guidance shaped her own life.

Chandra is not part of the first strike team sent into New Phyrexia. She waits on Dominaria until the survivors return with catastrophic news: Jace and Nissa have been compleated.

The others want to preserve what remains of the resistance. Chandra refuses to leave Nissa behind.

She returns to New Phyrexia with Wrenn and Seven. They find Koth's rebels and fight their way toward Realmbreaker. Nissa stops them in Cathartic Reunion, tears Seven apart, and delivers the survivors to Elesh Norn.

Elspeth's return gives them another chance. Chandra and Koth protect Wrenn as the dryad joins with Realmbreaker. Chandra faces Nissa again to buy Wrenn enough time to find Teferi and Zhalfir.

The plan moves New Phyrexia out of the Multiverse and brings Zhalfir back. Without Norn's signal, the Phyrexian armies collapse. Nissa survives, but restoring her costs Melira her life and Karn his spark.

Choosing a life with Nissa

The invasion ends with Chandra's spark intact and Nissa's gone.

Nissa assumes the difference will separate them. Chandra can still cross the Blind Eternities in an instant. Nissa must use the new Omenpaths, whose routes can be slow, dangerous, or unpredictable. She tells Chandra to leave rather than wait for resentment.

Chandra follows her.

In She Who Breaks the World, they finally stop speaking around the choice. They kiss and decide to travel together through the Omenpaths.

They know their lives will not become easy. They decide the difficulty will belong to both of them.

Racing for the Aetherspark

Back on Avishkar, Chandra enters the Ghirapur Grand Prix. The prize is the Aetherspark, an object that might give Nissa the power to planeswalk again.

Chandra joins the Cloudspire Racing Team instead of Pia's Aether Rangers. The choice hurts her mother, while Chandra treats winning as the only part that matters. The race crosses Avishkar, Amonkhet, and Muraganda before returning to Ghirapur.

It also brings Chandra back into Jace's story.

Jace and Vraska appear during the final stage, looking for Loot. Chandra protects him and refuses to burn racers whose minds Jace has taken over. That restraint leaves her vulnerable. Jace defeats her and escapes with Loot while a dragon attack tears through the city.

Chandra does not win the race. The Champions of Amonkhet cross the finish line first and claim the Aetherspark. Nissa finds Chandra injured but alive. Elspeth heals the worst of the damage, and Chandra prepares to attend a ceremony with Pia and the woman she now openly calls her girlfriend.

The ending of The Bloodless End does not give Chandra what she entered the race to win. It gives her something she once found much harder: a home she does not have to flee after failure.

Chandra sees what Jace is planning

Jace's attack leaves more than bruises. Chandra experiences flashes of his thoughts and a plan involving another reality.

She follows that warning to Arcavios during Secrets of Strixhaven. Jace needs the oracle Jadzi and a reality-snarl connected to Titan's Grave. Chandra tries to stop the work before he can use it.

Ajani does not believe her at first. Their argument becomes a brutal fight, with Chandra already injured and still refusing to stay down. Neither is under Jace's control. Two old friends are hurting each other because both believe restraint will cost the Multiverse.

In Beneath the Surface, Ajani finally drops his weapon. Chandra stops. They choose to look for another answer together, but Jace's agent Tam pushes Jadzi into the reality breach and advances the plan.

The second Multiverse is becoming real.

Reality Fracture and the last fight with Jace

Chandra and Ajani go to Vryn with news for Vraska: Jace is alive.

He has divided parts of himself and built an Echoverse, a second Multiverse shaped around the belief that suffering can be designed away. His plan will overlay that creation onto the original. The people already living there will not be healed. They will be replaced.

Vraska joins them. So does Garruk Wildspeaker, whose senses can detect Jace's illusions. Together they cross the Echoverse, recover the separated parts of Jace, and reach the Theorist, the part of him carrying out the merger.

The Echoverse has made counterparts for Jace's old friends. Chandra's is a coolheaded blue cryomancer. Chandra decides this is the life she might have lived if Kiran had survived, but that is her interpretation of the double, not a narrator-confirmed history.

The group returns Jace's divided selves to him. Whole again, he understands that the overlay must end and that his death is part of his contingency. Vraska kills him at his request. His pulse stops, his spark leaves his body, and his friends later bury him on Vryn.

That is not enough to separate two realities already colliding. Jace's spark enters Tam, who calls Emrakul. The Eldrazi titan consumes the Echoverse while leaving the original Multiverse behind.

The spark carries Jace's memories and a message recorded for his death. Tam is not Jace's body restored. She describes herself both as a new person and as his continuation, leaving identity more complicated than the fact of his physical death.

Chandra and Ajani escape first. In Happy Birthday, Chandra calls their destination and planeswalks away: Vryn.

Where Chandra stands now

Chandra is alive. She still has her planeswalker spark, and her latest explicit action is a planeswalk to Vryn after Jace's death. The story does not show what she does when she arrives.

Her relationship with Nissa also remains intact in their latest scenes together. Nissa is not with the group inside the Echoverse, so Reality Fracture does not add a new ending to their relationship.

Chandra began as a child running from an execution. For years, every escape looked like proof that she could survive alone. Keral Keep, the Gatewatch, her family, and even her last broken reunion with Jace taught her something harder.

Freedom is not the absence of ties. Chandra's strongest choices come from deciding which ones she will keep.
