Krenko, Baron of Tin Street

Krenko's published story begins without guild backing. He builds a criminal business in the gaps between Ravnica's ten guilds, survives imprisonment and two planar invasions, and keeps finding a way to come out richer.

By his latest appearance, he is no longer simply Krenko, Mob Boss. He calls himself the Baron of Tin Street, attends parties with Ravnica's ruling class, and wants to create a goblin aristocracy around his gang. The money behind that new life came from one of the ugliest chapters in his story.

This biography follows the published canon in order. Where the record is silent, it stays silent. Magic has never given Krenko a childhood story or explained how he assembled his first crew. His known history starts after he is already a working criminal.

Krenko before he was the mob boss

Krenko's first major story appearance came in Jenna Helland's 2012 story Krenko, Mob Boss. Despite the title, this version of Krenko is still building his reputation.

He has a warehouse, a crew, and enough nerve to take dangerous contracts. He also answers to someone more powerful: Mr. Taz, a well-connected employer whose true identity is hidden from him.

Mr. Taz hires Krenko for a job inside Sunhome, the Boros Legion's fortress. The target is Feather, the disgraced angel whose position as Boros guildmaster is being challenged by Aurelia. Krenko is not sent to rescue her. He is sent to cut off one of her feathers and bring it back.

Krenko walks into Sunhome, listens to the soldiers, and joins a goblin maintenance crew to learn where Feather is being held. Then he starts rumors and fights before setting off explosions throughout the building. With the garrison in chaos, he reaches Feather's cell, breaks her detention sphere with Taz's enchanted shiv, takes two feathers, and escapes. The operation shows the pattern that will define him: he treats Ravnica's guilds as obstacles, customers, or targets, never as institutions worthy of loyalty.

Mr. Taz immediately gives him another job. Krenko must enter Orzhova, the old Orzhov guildhall, collect money supposedly owed to Feather, and steal another item for his employer.

The official vignette Epic Experiment shows the opening Krenko needs: an Izzet experiment tears open a portal near him and Taz. Taz observes that reaching the Orzhov inner sanctum may not be as difficult as Krenko expected.

An official Azorius report, The Azorius Ten Most Wanted, records what happened next. Krenko entered Orzhova through an illegal portal, ran the guards through the building, took a thrull hostage, used it as part of an explosion, and vanished. The Ghost Council accused him of stealing something but refused to identify it. The report describes his syndicate as flourishing and lists his connection to Mr. Taz.

The published Krenko sources never identify Mr. Taz. Krenko can tell that the man's human skin does not fit correctly, but he does not know who is underneath. As far as the record shows, he takes a well-paid job from a dangerous patron and does not ask who is behind the mask.

The rise of Krenko's criminal empire

The Orzhova theft made Krenko one of the Azorius Senate's most wanted criminals. It did not stop his business.

Over the following years, his gang grew into a serious organized crime operation. By the time of Doug Beyer's 2015 story Limits, Krenko is a recognized kingpin with warehouses, armed goblins, and a regular table at the Millennial, an exclusive restaurant high above the city.

That story begins during a gang war. Dargig, the youngest of the Shattergang Brothers, is found with his throat cut after a weapons deal goes wrong. Word on the street says Krenko killed him himself. The surviving brothers retaliate by blowing up several of Krenko's warehouses, and Krenko responds in kind.

The story presents the murder as a rumor rather than showing it happen. It never gives a final, independent confirmation that Krenko killed Dargig. What it does confirm is the violent conflict that follows.

Gideon Jura, then working with the Boros, hunts Krenko down at the Millennial. Krenko manages to stab Gideon twice in the leg, but Gideon still delivers him to a Boros garrison in chains. When the Shattergang Brothers threaten Boros territory unless he is handed over, Krenko correctly predicts that the Legion will keep him in custody instead.

The tabletop adventure Krenko's Way in Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica supplies the next fixed part of his history. Krenko is convicted of Dargig's murder and assaulting Gideon, then sentenced to life in Sawtooth Prison. He starts a riot to secure a transfer to the Azorius maximum-security prison Udzec. During that transfer, agents of an unnamed former associate create a distraction, and Krenko slips away to rejoin his gang and rebuild his power.

The identity of the associate varies with the adventure, as does what happens once the player characters begin hunting Krenko. Those branches are not fixed canon. His conviction and transfer are part of the published setup, as are his escape and attempted return to power.

Krenko becomes the Tin Street Kingpin

Krenko's next card, Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin, appeared in War of the Spark in 2019.

The title matters more to his biography than the card's combat text. Krenko is no longer presented only as the head of a goblin mob. He now claims a title tied to Tin Street, a recognizable part of Ravnica's street-level underworld.

The card also places him in Ravnica during Nicol Bolas's invasion. Its flavor text captures his method: let civilians flee, take what they leave behind, and finish before the enemy arrives. It is a short joke on a card, but it echoes the much harsher account of his behavior during the next invasion.

Krenko during the Phyrexian invasion

Krenko does not take center stage in the published March of the Machine fiction. His actions during the invasion are revealed later, in the Murders at Karlov Manor story.

While Ravnica fought the Phyrexians, Krenko sent goblins into shops and warehouses whose defenders had left for the battle. His crews took whatever people needed most, from clean water and food to medicine. Krenko then sold those supplies back to desperate residents at extreme prices.

The accusation comes from Oba of Trostani in Episode 9: Beauty in Destruction. Krenko does not deny it. He argues that goblins died retrieving those goods from behind enemy lines and asks why anyone expected him to risk his life without making a profit.

That answer is important. Krenko's crews did enter dangerous territory, and some of them died. He still chose to exploit people who needed the supplies to survive. Oba claims that thousands might have lived without his price gouging. The story does not provide an independent count, so that number remains her accusation, not a confirmed casualty figure.

The profits transformed Krenko's place in the city. Wizards' official Murders at Karlov Manor character guide says he rebuilt his criminal enterprise and lived on wealth accumulated during the invasion. It also gives him his newest title: Krenko, Baron of Tin Street.

The baron of Tin Street

By Murders at Karlov Manor, Krenko is trying to turn money into social rank.

He attends upper-class parties, networks with Ravnica's aristocracy, and plans to create a new goblin elite that cannot be pushed around by the city's existing powers. This ambition has a collective edge. Krenko wants to raise his gang with him. The fortune funding that dream, however, came from hoarding and reselling essential supplies during a catastrophe.

At Teysa Karlov's party, Krenko is an invited guest but not a comfortable one. Teysa reminds him that he owes the Karlov family personally. He promises to pay the debt with interest and insists that, for the evening, he deserves the treatment due any other guest.

After Teysa's murder, Krenko becomes frightened that the killer is targeting important people and that he could be next. In Episode 6: Explosions of Genius, his goblins abduct the Izzet inventor Kylox. Krenko wants information about the murders and is prepared to force it out of him.

Alquist Proft and Etrata interrupt the interrogation. Before they can settle it, a magically manipulated attacker bursts in and tries to kill Krenko. Kylox takes the fatal blow. Krenko survives and helps Etrata restrain the attacker, but only after his kidnapping put Kylox in the room where he died.

Krenko later joins the suspects and guild leaders gathered at Vitu-Ghazi. He insists that he has a pardon and repeatedly worries that Proft has trapped him with a murderer. When Proft exposes Oba as the architect of the killings, Oba exposes Krenko's conduct during the Phyrexian invasion.

The confrontation turns violent. Krenko spends much of it trapped in roots while Ravnica's most powerful figures fight around him. Once Kaya frees the survivors, Aurelia drags him away, determined to arrest someone after the disaster.

That is Krenko's last confirmed point in the story. Kaya suspects the evidence will not be enough to convict him because it came from Oba's accusations during the confrontation. The text does not confirm a conviction, a prison sentence, or another escape.

Krenko's three cards tell the same story

Krenko has three main legendary cards, and their titles form a compact version of his rise:

  1. Krenko, Mob Boss, first released in Magic 2013 in 2012.
  2. Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin, released in War of the Spark in 2019.
  3. Krenko, Baron of Tin Street, released in Murders at Karlov Manor in 2024.

The game mechanics repeat his signature theme. Both the original Mob Boss and the Tin Street Kingpin create Goblin tokens, while the Baron card trades artifacts for benefits and more followers. Those mechanics fit his expanding gang and later fixation on property, but they are gameplay abstractions rather than literal story powers.

The mechanics are not a substitute for the fiction, but the names track the change clearly: mob boss, Tin Street kingpin, and baron.

Where Krenko stands now

Krenko is alive. He is wealthy. His criminal organization has recovered, and his ambition has moved beyond control of Tin Street.

His legal position is less certain. He had a pardon when the Karlov Manor investigation began. By the end, Aurelia had learned about his invasion profiteering and was hauling him away. No later story has confirmed what charge, if any, survived.

Later cards add characterization without resolving that cliffhanger. The 2024 card Goblin Negotiation describes a protection racket operating in Krenko's name. A 2026 Secret Lair printing of Krenko, Mob Boss calls him a "proud family man" feeding "many bitey mouths." Neither reprint establishes a dated event after Karlov Manor, and the second does not confirm that he has biological children.

That uncertainty suits him. Krenko's career runs through dangerous contracts, imprisonment and escape, and disasters that he finds a way to monetize. He has never ruled Ravnica, but he has repeatedly made a business out of the openings its guilds leave behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Krenko is an independent Ravnican goblin criminal who built a gang into a major organized crime operation. He has been called a mob boss, the Tin Street Kingpin, and the Baron of Tin Street.

Krenko is guildless. He has worked for powerful employers and dealt with several guilds, but official sources consistently identify him as an independent criminal and mercenary.

Mr. Taz was a disguised and well-connected criminal patron. Krenko recognized that Taz was wearing an ill-fitting human skin, but the published Krenko sources do not confirm who was underneath it.

Aurelia dragged Krenko away intending to make an arrest after his wartime profiteering came to light. The story immediately notes that the evidence might not be enough to convict him, so his final legal status is unresolved.
