What Is a Robot Hero Token in MTG?

Robot Hero is a 2/1 colorless artifact creature token with flying.

That is the whole game object. It is not a secret Commander card, not a hidden Marvel legend, and not something you put into the 99. It is a token created by another card, mainly Iron Man, Tony Stark from Marvel Super Heroes Commander.

The confusion makes sense. Token cards look like Magic cards. GrimDeck and Scryfall list them because collectors need to identify them. But a token listing does not mean the token belongs in your decklist.

Here is the clean way to read it.

Robot Hero is a token, not a deck card

The printed Robot Hero token has this type line:

Token Artifact Creature - Robot Hero

It has flying and 2 power / 1 toughness. It has no mana cost because you do not cast it. A card or effect creates it during the game.

That is why Robot Hero is marked not legal in Commander, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, and other formats. Tokens do not need format legality the way normal cards do because they are not deck-construction choices.

If a card tells you to create a Robot Hero token in a Commander game, the token can exist in that game. You just cannot start with Robot Hero as one of your 100 cards.

Iron Man, Tony Stark makes Robot Hero tokens

Iron Man, Tony Stark is the important card behind this token.

Iron Man is a legendary artifact creature with flying. His last ability says that whenever you cast a red spell, you create a 2/1 colorless Robot Hero artifact creature token with flying.

That means the deckbuilding question is not "Can I play Robot Hero?" The real question is:

Can my deck play Iron Man, and can it cast enough red spells to make the token matter?

In Commander, Iron Man can lead a mono-red artifact deck because he is a legendary creature and his color identity is red. Robot Hero tokens then become part of the game plan once Iron Man is on the battlefield.

Do Robot Hero tokens count as artifact creatures?

Yes.

Robot Hero is both an artifact and a creature. That matters a lot.

Artifact payoffs see it. Creature payoffs see it. Token payoffs see it. Flying payoffs see it. Sacrifice outlets can sacrifice it. Equipment can attach to it. Damage engines can care that a creature entered. Cards that count artifacts can count it.

That gives Iron Man decks a simple plan:

1. Resolve Iron Man.
2. Cast red spells.
3. Turn every red spell into another evasive artifact body.
4. Use those bodies for damage, sacrifice value, artifact counts, or combat pressure.

The token is small, but repeatable 2/1 flyers add up quickly when every red spell brings another one.

Robot Hero does not go in the 99

This is the part worth getting right in collection apps and deck builders.

Your Commander deck has 100 actual cards: one commander plus 99 other cards, unless you are using partner-style rules. Tokens are outside the deck.

So if you own a physical Robot Hero token, keep it with the deck box. Use it during games. Track it in your collection if you care about having the matching token.

Do not count it as:

• one of your 99
• a card in your sideboard
• a commander
• a playable artifact creature card you can draw

If your deck builder shows Robot Hero as a main-deck card, something went wrong. The card that belongs in the deck is Iron Man, Tony Stark, not the token he creates.

How Robot Hero works after it is created

Once Robot Hero is on the battlefield, it behaves like a normal token creature.

It can attack. It can block. It can be destroyed, exiled, bounced, sacrificed, tapped, equipped, copied, or pumped. If it leaves the battlefield, it goes to the new zone briefly, then ceases to exist as a state-based action.

That last part means a Robot Hero token can still trigger death effects when it dies. It just will not stay in the graveyard.

For Commander decks, the useful synergies are obvious:

• Impact Tremors turns each Robot Hero into damage.
• Skullclamp can turn extra tokens into cards.
• Goblin Bombardment converts spare bodies into reach.
• artifact-count cards get another artifact for each token.
• anthem effects make a fleet of 2/1 flyers much scarier.

You do not need to force every token payoff into the deck. Start with the cards that are already good when Iron Man is not around, then let the Robot Heroes make them better.

Why databases list tokens at all

Card databases list tokens because players and collectors need to identify physical objects.

That does not make every listed object playable. It means the object exists, has art, has a collector number, and may matter for set completion, deck accessories, sealed-product sorting, or token matching.

The practical split is simple:

• Normal card: goes into a deck if legal.
• Token card: sits beside the deck and represents something created during the game.
• Front card or insert: helps identify a product, but usually is not a game card.

Robot Hero belongs in the token bucket.

The short answer

Robot Hero is a real MTG token card, but it is not a normal playable deck card.

If you are building around it, build around Iron Man, Tony Stark. If you are tracking what you own, record the token separately from your deck cards. The token matters on the battlefield, not in the 99.
